Long Range Shooting Events & Competitions

overview

The High Desert Hunter runs May 1–3, 2026, at Buckskin Hills Shooting Range, set in the high desert outside Vernal, UT. This event is built for NRL Hunter competitors and serious field shooters who want realistic terrain, blind stages, and minimal hand-holding.

Expect an actual hunting-style course of fire spread across ridge tops and three draws, with targets laid out in a rare 270-degree horseshoe configuration. Terrain is mostly sagebrush with limited trees, multiple drainages, and variable footing; good boots matter. The weather can be cold and muddy in May.

Key details:

  • 20 blind-heavy stages across ~¾ mile of terrain
  • Ridge-top and draw shooting, natural positions only
  • Targets out to ~1,000 yards; the majority require terrain reading.
  • 100-yard zero range plus steel to ~1,100 yards on check-in day
  • Vehicle access throughout the match; food and water provided
  • Side matches and charity fundraisers on-site.

Shooter Insight:

This match rewards patience, glassing discipline, and movement efficiency. Rushing blind stages here will cost points fast.
