Founded in 1971 by NC National Guard Rifle Team members and local civilians, the North State Shooting Club (NSSC) operates from the Camp Butner National Guard Training Site in North Carolina. The club exists to promote safe, competitive marksmanship and fosters civilian-military interaction through disciplined, structured competition.
NSSC specializes in NRA and CMP high-power rifle disciplines, including F-Open, F-T/R, Palma, Match Rifle, and Service Rifle. All matches are registered and contribute to official NRA classifications. While NSSC does not own its range, it conducts events on the National Guard’s 600- to 1,000-yard rifle lines, using electronic target systems and traditional pit targets as a backup. Shooting is done from prone or sling-supported positions, with scoring handled by participants in a relay format.
Membership is open to those who attend at least three matches and secure a current member sponsor. While the range itself is not open to the general public, all matches are open to the public, offering newcomers a clear path into formal competition. NSSC does not provide instruction, but new shooters are welcomed, guided, and encouraged to participate. F-Class provides an easy entry point, allowing participants to use bipods or rests.
There are no on-site concessions or camping facilities, but area hotels and nearby parks offer accommodations. This club is ideal for civilian competitors, service members, and precision rifle shooters seeking a high-integrity, rule-based environment featuring national record holders and elite marksmen.
