Develop the ability to run a scoped AR from close quarters to 700 yards with speed, precision, and efficient target transitions under pressure.

This Long Range Scoped AR course at Thunder Ranch is designed to push semi-auto platforms beyond their typical role, building capability from close-range engagements out to 700 yards. The focus is on understanding both the strengths and limitations of AR-style rifles, allowing shooters to apply them effectively across a wide range of distances and scenarios.
Students develop the ability to engage targets rapidly at varying distances using a mix of dialing and reticle hold-offs. Emphasis is placed on solving shooting problems under time pressure, requiring fast decision-making, efficient gun handling, and consistent shot execution. The course integrates positional shooting, movement, and multi-target engagement to reflect realistic application rather than static range work.
Training is hands-on and performance-driven, including structured drills and timed runs such as the Punisher. Shooters will work through multiple positions and shooting problems, refining transitions between near and far targets while maintaining accuracy and control with a semi-auto system.
Key training areas include:
This course is suited to shooters running AR-style rifles who want to extend effective range and improve performance under time pressure. 5.56 AR platforms are the primary focus, with AK and SCAR variants supported. Low to mid-power optics, quality ammunition, and 400 to 600 rounds are expected, along with safe and confident rifle handling.
