Shooting Performance Institute, run by Jim Erwin and team in Minden, Nevada, provides public firearms instruction spanning handgun, carbine, CCW, and long-range precision rifle.

Shooting Performance Institute, or SPI, is based in Minden, Nevada and is run by owner-instructor Jim Erwin with instructors Jim, Mike, and Dave. The team brings 25-plus years of combined experience in Army Special Operations, high-threat protection work, and competitive shooting. SPI teaches handgun, carbine, Nevada CCW, beginner firearms safety and operation, and long-range precision rifle. Its training approach centers on active instruction and measurable shooting performance, with emphasis on speed, accuracy, and confidence.
For precision shooters, SPI offers long-range instruction with stated results that put students on steel at 1,000 yards after a first class, and it publicly frames its capability from 1 yard to 1 mile. Courses are available for all experience levels, with private lessons for individuals and small groups alongside standard classes and specialty events such as the Hunters Challenge. SPI also supports equipment setup through custom rifle builds, custom Staccato pistol packages, and a small selection of shooting gear and accessories.
Who It's For
Known For
SPI fits shooters who want practical coaching across both defensive and precision disciplines, especially newer long-range students, hunters, and MIL or LE shooters looking for private tune-up work. If you want to build rifle performance on the range and connect it to equipment setup, SPI is worth a close look.
