Hosted at the iconic NRA Whittington Center in New Mexico, the Precision Rifle – School of 1000 Yards is a 3-day intensive that pushes shooters beyond their comfort zone using science, real-world data, and high-angle fieldwork. This course is perfect for long-range hunters and competitive shooters looking to enhance their ballistic skills and increase their effective range.
What you’ll learn:
- Understanding how bullets travel, setting up scopes, and learning shooting techniques.
- Data gathering: muzzle velocity, atmospheric inputs, DOPE tracking
- Known-distance shooting from 100 to 1,760 yards
- Environmental correction: wind, temperature, humidity, pressure, and elevation
- Shooter/spotter communication and team roles
- Timed engagements, target transitions, and simulated match-style drills
- High-angle engagement techniques and gear maintenance
How it’s delivered:
Classroom sessions are balanced with daily range time. Day 1 focuses on marksmanship and zeroing; Day 2 introduces environmental variables and DOPE validation; Day 3 drills advanced techniques, including high-angle fire and time-pressure scenarios.
Where and what you’ll shoot:
Live-fire at the Cooper Range with steel and paper targets from 100 yards to 1 mile across open terrain and varying elevation.
Gear & prep:
- Bring your rifle or pre-arrange a rental. Required items include:
- Precision rifle with optic (min. 10x, 100 MOA/29 MIL travel preferred)
- 200+ rounds (hand loads welcome)
- Spotting scope + tripod, sling, shooting mat
- DOPE log, cleaning kit, water container, chair, and weather gear
- Ballistic app/tool strongly recommended
