Randy Powell

Randy Powell is the Lead Long Range Precision Rifle Instructor at Whittington U and the owner of Thunder Ammo & Arms. A respected name in the world of extreme long-range shooting, Randy has spent decades pushing the limits of ballistic design and marksmanship. He is an Instructor for NRA Certified Rifle and Pistol and a Certified Range Safety Officer.

Known for his cutting-edge work with 50 BMG, .460 Steyr, .416 Barrett, and .338 Lapua, Randy has designed bullet profiles and custom chambers that maximize velocity while reducing pressure. His ammunition holds the current Fifty Caliber Shooters Association (FCSA) 50 BMG Hunter Class 1000-yard World Record: a 2.782” five-shot group, fired with a bullet and chamber of his design.

Randy’s ammunition has been trusted by SWAT units across the U.S. and issued to U.S. Military special operations teams. As a competitor, he has earned multiple wins and top-five finishes in ELR and 50 BMG disciplines, including the prestigious FCSA Iron Man 4-Gun title. He’s also a dedicated match director, having run regional and world-level 50 BMG competitions at the NRA Whittington Center since 2009.
