LE Designated Marksman/Patrol Overwatch Course

This 3-day LE Designated Marksman and Patrol Overwatch Course is built for officers tasked with providing precision support using scoped carbines during patrol and tactical operations. The curriculum focuses on reducing decision-making errors under pressure by reinforcing a structured approach to overwatch, target engagement, and real-time problem solving in dynamic environments.

Students will build a solid working knowledge of rifle setup, zeroing procedures, and ballistic fundamentals, then progress to applying that data in both known- and unknown-distance scenarios. Strong emphasis is placed on self-spotting, shot correction, and integrating tools such as chronographs, ballistic solvers, and laser rangefinders to produce reliable first-round impacts.

Training is delivered through a mix of classroom instruction and practical range work. Shooters will spend significant time working from tripods, barricades, and supported positions, reflecting realistic urban and semi-urban overwatch conditions. Low-light and night operations are also introduced, including the use of white light, night vision, and thermal systems where available.

• Internal, external, and terminal ballistics application
• Range estimation and laser rangefinder techniques

• Tripod and barricade shooting with support bags.
• Inter-team communication and coordination
• Target detection and observation exercises
• Low-light and night operation considerations with issued equipment

This course is intended for sworn law enforcement officers, active-duty military, and government contractors operating in a designated marksman or overwatch role. Students are expected to arrive with a functional SPR or DMR platform, appropriate support gear, and the ability to safely operate their system. Night vision and specialty equipment are optional, but should be brought if issued.
