270 General Rifle

Gunsite Academy’s 270 General Rifle course, called “The Jewel of Battle,” is a five-day program designed to improve practical field rifle skills based on Jeff Cooper’s Modern Technique.

Students will train across a full spectrum of shooting positions, including standing, kneeling, sitting, and prone, with timed drills that emphasize quick target acquisition and engagement at ranges between 25 and 300 yards. Expect hands-on work in terrain-based simulators and real-world scenarios where external and terminal ballistics are most critical. By the end of the course, shooters should be capable of on-demand hits in unknown distance environments under time pressure.

Course delivery combines classroom learning with live-fire fieldwork, led by experienced instructors like Rangemaster Mike Moore and veterans Walt Wilkinson and Gary Smith. The focused instruction builds confidence and competence for all backgrounds.

Gear Requirements:

• A reliable field rifle in non-magnum calibers (.243, .308, .30-30, etc.)
• 500 rounds of ammunition (ammo packs available for .223, .308, and 6.5 CM)
• Rental rifles and spotting scopes are available
• Supported camping and RV accommodations onsite
